January Reflections: Lessons and Mindset Shifts for Growth

As the first month of the year ends, I’ve taken a step back to reflect on the lessons learned, the shifts in mindset, and the challenges faced. I normally spend time reflecting on a few questions only in December but this month I decided to reflect in the end of the month. Each month presents a new opportunity to grow, but it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle without pausing to assess how far we’ve come. So, I asked myself some key questions this month: What is the biggest lesson I’ve learned? How can I apply it moving forward? What bold steps have I taken that pushed me out of my comfort zone?

In this post, I’ll share my reflections from January, the mindset shifts that have contributed to my growth, and what I’m focusing on next. As you read, I encourage you to pause and consider your own answers to these questions—what can we learn from our experiences that will propel us forward in the coming month?

Here are a few questions I asked myself this month:

Time is the most priceless resource in the world. It’s the one thing equally distributed to all of us. Regardless of our power, title, position, or ethnicity, everyone gets the same 24 hours each day. How we spend it, however, makes all the difference.

While I’ve always known this, in January, I reflected more deeply on how effectively some people manage their time. It’s fascinating to consider how we prioritize and use the time we’re given. In the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing the insights I’ve gained on time and priorities.

Mindset – Embracing Flexibility: Adapting to New Realities

As a marathon runner, I’ve always cherished running outdoors—even braving harsh Toronto winters. I used to enjoy cold temperatures, finding them perfect for running, except on rare days when fresh snow made it unsafe.

However, after moving to Calgary, icy sidewalks became a constant challenge, making outdoor runs nearly impossible. I wrestled with the idea of using a treadmill because, for years, I’d told myself, “I hate running on treadmills.” I even dismissed it as equipment that just occupied space.

But I realized that if I wanted to keep running, I had two choices: embrace the treadmill or complain endlessly about the weather. Complaining wouldn’t solve the problem, so I adopted a solution-oriented mindset.

Flexibility became my new mantra. I swapped my old “I hate treadmills” narrative for a fresh one: “I love the treadmill because it lets me run, no matter the temperature or conditions outside.”

This mindset shift has taught me the value of gracefully adapting to new realities. Growth takes root when we begin rewriting the stories we tell ourselves.

I struggled with time management. My days often felt unorganized, and I wasn’t as productive as I wanted to be. Moving forward, I’m reevaluating my priorities and finding better ways to structure my time.

This month, I took a bold step by actively posting content on my YouTube channel. Though the channel has been around for a while, I finally uploaded four videos. It was intimidating at first but ultimately rewarding. It’s a great reminder that progress often starts outside our comfort zones. My goal is to improve my public speaking to the point where I can look back and see how far I’ve come. I plan to focus on running the Youth Leadership Program and training for marathons. I realize it’s a blessing to have this opportunity to impact young leaders’ lives. I’ll explore ways to improve engagement in Zoom sessions and prepare myself throughout February for the March launch. I’ll also focus on booking my 2025 marathon runs. These activities align with my goals for 2025, and I’m excited to see how they shape my growth in the coming months.

As we move into February, please take time to reflect on your own journey. What lessons have you learned? What habits or shifts have contributed to your growth? Let’s embrace the month ahead with clarity, purpose, and gratitude.
