It’s hard to believe that we’re already in late April. Remember those resolutions we set at the start of the year with all the enthusiasm and determination? Whether it was cutting out chocolates and carbs or committing to daily workouts, it’s time for a reality check.
Did you know that, on average, 80% of the resolutions fail? At least a quarter of people typically make at least one New Year’s resolution, and many end in disappointments. Let’s reflect on our progress so far. Life often throws us curveballs, but we shouldn’t let our goals slip away.
Many of us prioritize the initial steps but struggle to maintain consistent effort and attention toward our goals or aspirations. Consider these common examples.
- People will spend more time planning the wedding than building a strong marriage.
- People will invest a lot of money in buying books but fail to dedicate time to reading them.
- People often spend money on gym memberships but fail to exercise and make progress towards their fitness goals.
- People will spend hours browsing recipes but rarely take the time to prepare a healthy meal at home.
- People will often spend time planting seeds of ideas or aspirations but fail to nurture them with consistent effort and attention.
Why does this happen?
It’s easy to plan the first step, but life often derails our plans, causing us to lose sight of our goals. When setting goals, we assume we have ample time, but unexpected challenges disrupt our plans. It’s crucial to adapt and get back on track.
Question to Ponder – Anticipating Challenges and Setbacks: What obstacles do you anticipate, and how can you overcome them? For instance, how can you still prioritize your fitness goal if you have a busy schedule? Anticipating challenges allows you to plan alternatives.
Why Check-ins?
It’s crucial to pause and assess where we stand. Regular check-ins, whether weekly, monthly, or quarterly, are essential. These periodic evaluations prompt us to reevaluate our priorities and realign ourselves with our committed goals.
To master your year and achieve your goals, consider implementing the following strategies:
- Setting Clear Goals: Think of your goals as guiding stars that lead you toward your dreams. Clear and measurable goals act as your roadmap, helping you navigate through life’s twists and turns. Have you set goals that excite you and inspire action? Are they Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART)?
- Embrace the Right Attitude: Picture yourself as the hero of your own story, facing challenges with courage and determination. Cultivating a positive mindset is like putting on armour against negativity. Shift your perspective from “I have to” to “I want to.” How can you infuse joy and enthusiasm into your journey toward your goals?
- Creating Conditions for Success: Imagine your goals as precious seeds waiting to sprout. To nurture them, you must create fertile soil free from distractions. Clear away the clutter and focus on what truly matters. What small changes can you make in your daily routine to create a nurturing environment for your goals to thrive? For instance, I have a firm boundary regarding my social media consumption. Because I tend to get sucked into it, I have put guards in place to protect my time and create conditions for success for my goals.
- Committing Time for Personal Growth: Envision yourself as a sculptor, carving out your masterpiece one stroke at a time. Personal growth requires dedicated time and effort. Make yourself a priority by carving out moments in your busy schedule for growth and development. Aim to allocate at least a few hours each week for personal growth. Even dedicating two hours a day for five days a week adds to significant progress over a year (approximately 520 hours). How can you carve out time daily to invest in your growth and well-being?
- Meticulous Planning and Milestone Celebrations: Picture yourself as an architect designing the blueprint for your dreams. Break down your big, audacious goals into bite-sized tasks, making them more manageable and less overwhelming. Setting clear targets for each milestone empowers you to track progress effectively. Celebrate each milestone, knowing that every small victory brings you closer to your dreams. How can you create a detailed action plan that excites and motivates you while incorporating celebration moments to acknowledge your progress?
Sample Goal: Running a Marathon
- Setting Clear Goals:
- Goal: Complete a marathon within the following year.
- Specific: Run 42.195 kilometres (26.2 miles) in an official marathon race.
- Measurable: Track progress using a running app to monitor distance covered and pace.
- Achievable: Start with smaller races (5k, 10k, half-marathon) to build endurance and confidence.
- Relevant: This aligns with my passion for fitness and my desire to challenge myself physically.
- Time-bound: Complete the marathon within 12 months from today.
- Attitude Adjustment:
- Shift from “I have to run” to “I want to run.” Embrace the journey as an opportunity for personal growth and achievement.

- Daily: Schedule runs and cross-training sessions around other commitments.
- Celebrate milestones such as completing longer distances, achieving personal bests in races, or hitting training targets.
- Break down the training schedule into manageable chunks:
- Committing Time for Personal Growth:

- Balance training with work, family, and social commitments to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being.
- Prioritize self-care practices such as stretching, foam rolling, and adequate sleep to support recovery and performance.
Conclusion
In summary, change inevitably demands a price, whether in time, effort, or sacrifice. Many individuals shy away from paying this cost, preferring the comfort of familiarity with the challenges of transformation. However, it’s essential to recognize that the ultimate cost of avoiding change is often even higher—it’s the opportunity for growth, fulfillment, and reaching our full potential. While change may initially seem daunting, its rewards can far surpass the challenges it presents.
“Most change fails because the price required is too high.” – William Somerset Maugham
As William Somerset Maugham wisely noted, “Most change fails because the price required is too high.” So, remember: the ultimate price of change is your comfort. Are you willing to pay it for the promise of a brighter future?
