Have you ever reached a goal and thought, ‘Now what?’ Or maybe the goal got frustrating you gave up halfway because the result felt far fetched. If so, you’re not alone. Many of us get stuck focusing on outcomes rather than who we’re becoming in the process. What if there’s a better way to set goals—one that brings joy, purpose, and lasting transformation? Let’s explore the power of identity goals.
The Pitfall of Outcome Goals
One of my biggest mistakes early in my goal-setting journey was concentrating exclusively on outcomes. While initially motivating, these goals often proved unrealistic and out of reach, leading to frustration. Focusing on external results can diminish the joy and purpose of goal setting, leaving you feeling defeated when progress doesn’t occur as expected. Moreover, upon achieving the intended outcome, I found myself abandoning the practice altogether.
The Power of Identity Goals
Identity goals allow you to focus on becoming the kind of person who naturally achieves what you once viewed as an “outcome goal.” When you set goals like, “I am a person who exercises regularly” or “I am a saver who thrives on living in a budget and saving for future,” you become motivated by the process, not just the results. This mindset shift fosters sustainability and growth.
When I started setting identity goals, the process became more fulfilling. It wasn’t about reaching a milestone like losing 10 lbs or hitting a financial target—it was about celebrating the small, consistent actions that aligned with who I was becoming.
My Journey from Flat Abs to Consistency
For example, I remember wishing for flat abs and setting a goal around that. Despite months and even years of exercising, I couldn’t get the abs I envisioned (mind you, I have zero control over food—abs are made in the kitchen!). At times, I felt frustrated. A few years ago, I removed flat abs from my goal list and changed it to “work out 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes.” Last year, I changed that to “work out every day.”
I no longer focus on my abs. Instead, I’ve worked out more consistently and enjoyed that far more than the pursuit of flat abs. I no longer look at my abs in the mirror and get frustrated; instead, I look at myself, and I’m proud of my consistency in working out.
This year, I plan to add a new goal of eating more protein-rich foods to balance my love for sugary treats. I call this goal, “I am a person who loves to eat nutritious meals that nourish my body, not my cravings.” Who knows—one day, I may end up with flat abs. But the real goal here is becoming a person who loves exercise and eats nutritious meals. Over time, the outcome is bound to happen. But even if it doesn’t, I have become someone who loves to move my body and nourish it. I’m more proud of the person I am becoming than just checking the box of flat abs with no energy or endurance.
Celebrate the Process, Not Just the Results
Don’t judge your fitness level based on whether you look a certain way. Instead, focus on your energy levels, strength, and how you feel after working out. The real measure of fitness is in the intangibles—the empowerment and vitality that comes from prioritizing your health. Trust the process. When you focus on actions like consistency in workouts instead of an outcome like losing 10 lbs, you’ll notice how your energy, strength, and mindset evolve. The journey can become miserable when we focus too much on the destination. Instead, enjoy the process; when you reach your destination, celebrate it as well.
Reflect and Reframe
Take a moment to reflect on your own goals. Are they outcome-focused or identity-based? Here are some prompts to help you reframe them:
- What kind of person do you want to become regarding your fitness, finances, career, or relationships?
- What small actions can you take today and the rest of the year that align with this identity?
Key Takeaways
- Focus on habits and consistency over specific outcomes.
- Set identity goals that inspire sustainable growth.
- Celebrate the process, not just the destination.
