5 Essential Tips to Maintain Long-Distance Friendships

We’ve all heard the saying “out of sight, out of mind.” While there’s truth to it, how can we change our mindset and actively pursue “out of sight, but never out of mind”? What should one do to get to this level, which is not natural to us? Have you ever lost touch with friends after a major life change? Today’s blog post will provide tips on how to stay connected with loved ones through life transitions. As I reflect on my journey from India to Toronto and now to Calgary, I realize how challenging it can be to maintain friendships during life changes.

About twenty years ago, we moved from India to Toronto. As immigrants, we worked hard to make ends meet, and with young kids, life kept getting in the way of the friendships I left behind. The shift was overwhelming, and maintaining friendships amidst the hustle of raising a family and building a life in a new country became difficult. Although I stayed in touch through social media, the relationships lost the depth I once cherished.

As I embark on a new adventure by moving to Calgary, life is less hectic —my children are adults now. Yet, one of the hardest parts of this move is leaving behind the people I’ve grown close to. After two decades of building deep connections, it feels like I’m leaving behind a significant part of my life.

With reflection comes the opportunity to make new choices, and this time, I’m determined to change how I approach my friendships. I want to be more intentional. I don’t want to get sucked into daily routines, schedules, and endless to-do lists that might sacrifice my friendships. I want to actively nurture old connections, not just to catch up, but to express my gratitude for how these friendships have shaped me to who I am today.

So, I reached out for advice and gathered a few tips that I plan to use. I hope these strategies can help you rekindle and revitalize your friendships.

Identify those who have influenced you and with whom you want to nurture relationships.

Review your list and determine how often you’d like to stay in touch. For friends who aren’t as close, consider reaching out on birthdays, anniversaries, and during the holidays. For deeper connections, decide on a regular cadence that feels right to you. Apps like WhatsApp or Google Calendar make it easier to schedule regular check-ins. You never know what your friend might be going through or how much they might appreciate hearing from you at just the right time.

When you meet up, don’t let it be a one-time event. Make tentative plans for your future meetup and put them on your calendar immediately. Setting a date, even if it’s a year or two away, helps prioritize your friendship. Whether it’s planning trips, grabbing coffee, or going for a virtual walk, these intentional actions maintain relationships over the long haul.

With long-distance friendships, your visits tend to be more intentional. Instead of quick coffee meetups, you get the opportunity to spend entire weekends together, creating more meaningful experiences. These extended times create richer experiences, allowing you to connect on a deeper level, share your stories, and create new memories.

One of the most impactful ways to maintain connections is through prayer. A friend of mine prays for one friend or family member each week. She reaches out to let them know they’re on her prayer list for the week and asks them if there’s anything specific she can pray for. This gesture reminds them they’re not alone in their struggles or joys, fosters a spiritual connection, and enriches the friendship.

By focusing on these small yet intentional acts of connection, we can keep friendships alive. The geographical distances will no longer threaten us. Take a moment today to reach out to a friend you’ve lost touch with—don’t wait! You never know the joy you’ll both experience from reconnecting.
