Waterfowls are birds that live by rivers, lakes and other bodies of fresh water. They have webbed feet and many are considered game birds (people hunt them for sport). Waterfowl migrate in spring and fall. Waterfowl constitutes of ducks, geese and swans and they are differentiated by the amount of vertebrae in their neck. Ducks have 16 or fewer neck vertebrae. Geese have 17-23 neck vertebrae. Swans have 24 or more neck vertebrae. Waterfowls typically eat plants, fish and invertebrates (Invertebrates are animals that don’t have a spine – Eg. worms, insects, arachnids, etc.). There are 37 different species of waterfowl found in Canada.
