“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” – John C. Maxwell
Have you ever wondered why some people grow into exceptional leaders while others remain stuck? The answer often lies in the small, consistent habits they cultivate daily.
I recently started reading John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, and one law in particular caught my attention: The Law of Process. It’s a powerful reminder that leadership isn’t built in a day—it’s built daily.
So often, we fall into the trap of believing that leaders are born, not made. But I believe this: if you consistently invest your time and effort into developing your leadership skills, the rewards will come. Many shy away from this commitment because we dabble sporadically and expect instant results. But here’s the truth—great leadership grows from daily effort, not through occasional bursts of energy. Success isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. Even if you’re leading well today, don’t fall into the “I’ve arrived” mindset. Growth is a lifelong process.
The Problem With Instant Gratification
Let’s face it: we live in a world that craves quick fixes. It’s tempting to give up when we don’t see results after a week or a month. Sound familiar?
We spend years building bad habits but expect to undo them in weeks. For instance, we commit to exercising, and a few weeks into the training, we step on the scale or look in the mirror, and when the results aren’t dramatic, we feel defeated. But transformation takes time. Stick with it for months—or even years—and you’ll see the fruits of your labour.
The Ice Water Analogy
Here’s a thought: imagine someone tells you that water turns into ice when cooled enough. You lower the water’s temperature from 20°C to 19°C. Then, week by week, you drop it to another degree. Nothing seems to happen. Weeks turn into months, and it’s still just water. Frustrated, you feel like quitting.
But here’s the twist: when the temperature finally hits 0°C—boom—transformation happens. The water freezes into ice.
Building your leadership is just like that. You may feel like nothing is changing after weeks or months of effort. You might even ask yourself, “Why am I not seeing any difference?” But stay the course. Transformation is happening beneath the surface. Keep going, and the breakthrough will come.
How to Build Your Leadership Daily
Here are three practical steps to grow as a leader every day:
- Learn something new daily. Read books, listen to podcasts, or watch videos in your area of focus. Whether it’s communication, team building, or strategic thinking, dedicate a few minutes each day. Consistency builds discipline, and discipline compounds over time. “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.“ – Robert Louis Stevenson.
- Team up with a learning partner. Growth is more fun—and effective—when you do it with someone else. Partner with a friend or colleague who shares your passion for learning. Discuss what you’ve read or listened to and share insights. You’ll gain fresh perspectives and stay motivated.
- Take Action – Apply what you learn. Knowledge becomes powerful when you put it into practice. Start small—try out new ideas, reflect on what works, and tweak as you go. Action turns theory into transformation. “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.“ – James Clear, Atomic Habits.
What Will You Start Today?
Leadership is built one habit, one choice, and one day at a time. So, what’s the first brick you’ll lay today? Remember, success isn’t about arriving—it’s about committing to the process. Trust the journey, and watch your transformation unfold.
“When you learn to enjoy the process, you stop chasing the reward, and ironically, the reward starts chasing you.” – Unknown.
