Trust is a delicate thing. It’s built over time through consistent actions but can be instantly shattered by a careless or dishonourable act. I often think of trust as a bank account—every time you act with honesty, integrity, reliability, and commitment, you make a small deposit into your trust account. Over time, these deposits accumulate, creating a strong foundation.
But just one act of foolishness, one moment of dishonesty or hypocrisy or betrayal or breaking a promise, can deplete the entire balance. And unlike a bank account, you can’t simply make a quick deposit to fix the damage.
Can you recall a time when someone’s trust in you grew because of consistent actions? Or a moment when a single mistake damaged trust?
Character: The Foundation of Trust
Think about the great men and women we admire. They stood the test of time, and we are still talking about them centuries later because at the heart of their legacy is their character. They’ve proven themselves trustworthy over time, earning the respect of others through their consistent actions and unwavering principles, and often paying the heavy price by laying down their life for the people they love and serve.
As J.R. Miller wisely said:
“The only thing that walks back from the tomb with the mourners and refuses to be buried is the character of a man. What a man is survives him. It can never be buried.”
While character forms the bedrock of trust, our daily actions bring it to life.
Practical Ways to Build Trust Daily
Trust grows through everyday actions. Whether it’s keeping a promise, listening without judgment, or admitting when you’re wrong, small consistent actions build a reputation of trust. Here are a few practical ways to strengthen trust daily:
- Keep Your Word: Always follow through on your promise, no matter how small.
- Own Your Mistakes: Be transparent, apologize sincerely, and commit to improvement. As Craig Groeschel says, “People would rather follow a leader who is real than a leader who is always right.”
- Listen with Intent: Give full attention, ask thoughtful questions, and truly hear others without planning your response.
- Speak with Clarity: Communicate clearly and honestly.
- Show Up Consistently: Be dependable and consistent in your actions, no matter the circumstances.
Rebuilding Trust After a Mistake
I’ve always believed in the power of redemption. Rebuilding trust after it’s broken is tough—it takes time, humility, and relentless effort. But when we take that first courageous step to face the damage, offer sincere apologies, and consistently show up with trustworthy actions, we begin the path to restoration. Trust isn’t restored overnight; it’s a journey of proving, over and over, that you are becoming someone worthy of it again.
Trust: Your Lifelong Investment
Trust is a fragile yet invaluable currency in our relationships and leadership. Just as it takes careful effort to build wealth, it requires daily diligence to invest in trust. Each choice we make—whether to act with integrity, to apologize sincerely, or to show up consistently—creates a legacy that others will remember long after we’re gone.
Your character is the foundation. Your actions are the proof. Start investing today—one choice at a time.
What small action will you take today to invest in trust?
