Transformative Power of Commitment, Consistency & Community

Introduction: At the beginning of the year, our pastor introduced a Bible reading challenge—to deep dive into the profound writings of Paul, with the ambitious goal of traversing Paul’s epistles six times within the year, delving into two chapters a day. As I eagerly signed up for the plan, little did I know the profound impact it would have on my journey of spiritual growth.

Personal Experience: In the initial weeks, I found myself lingering on the sidelines, quietly absorbing the assigned chapters and reflecting inwardly, yet hesitating to share my insights. However, it wasn’t until I witnessed the vibrant camaraderie of a group of women, fearlessly sharing their insights and reflections day after day, that I felt the call to join them. What began as a solitary pursuit transformed into a collaborative journey of discovery and growth. Sharing my insights demanded triple the time and effort as I articulated my thoughts into words.

Insights Gained: Despite the added effort, I discovered that active engagement with the group yielded tenfold rewards. By articulating my thoughts into coherent posts and engaging with others, I gained a clearer understanding of the scriptures. Additionally, seeing others affirm similar thoughts through their reflections provided validation, deepening my insight.

Practical Advice: In an age where technology facilitates the formation and sustenance of groups, I’ve realized that commitment is the lifeblood of thriving communities. It hinges on a daily dedication to showing up and nurturing a culture of consistency and support. To foster growth in any endeavour, whether spiritual or personal or relational, consider the following principles:

Genuine commitment begins from within. Define what matters most to you, and prioritize your growth (spiritual, physical, financial, relational) above all else. While external accountability helps, true commitment springs from internal resolve.

Establish a routine and stick to it unwaveringly. Consistency is the cornerstone of progress, whether daily practice or weekly commitments. When you commit to something, honour that commitment consistently.

Everything is enhanced in a community. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals committed to growth. Diverse perspectives enrich learning and provide mutual support in a community.

  • Commitment:  I have committed to exercising for at least 30 minutes daily.
  • Consistency: I consistently wake up early to work out (run or weight train), and on days I miss my morning exercise, I make it a point to go for a walk in the evening.
  • Community: Although I’ve always run alone, I recognize the power of community and have committed to running trails with others to improve my running and connect with fellow enthusiasts.
  • Commitment: I have committed to spending time reading and meditating on the word of God daily.
  • Consistency: I do it every day before going to work.
  • Community: The community of women who are also committed to this keeps me accountable, enriching my experience as I learn and glean from their insights. We are all reading the same two chapters, and we share insights throughout the day, enhancing our collective understanding and providing mutual encouragement.
  • Commitment: I have committed to spending time with my husband every day.
  • Consistency:  We start our mornings with coffee together, discussing our plans for the day.
  • Community: Marriage is of utmost importance to me. That’s why we are part of a couples’ group of six couples committed to improving and cherishing our relationships. In one of my conversations with the son of one of the couple, he shared that his parents have gone out for dates every Friday night for years. His words touched me deeply, as they exemplify a couple committed to improving their marriage, setting a beautiful example for their children to witness and learn from.

I want you to know that although I’ve significantly improved my commitment to the goals I treasure, and I consistently pursue them with a supportive community, I didn’t start this way. I began with commitment and struggled with consistency. It was only after refining my consistency that I sought out a community. So, don’t be too hard on yourself. The key is to start, even if it’s a gradual process of growth and development.

Commitment is critical in all pursuits. Embrace your goals wholeheartedly and commit to them consistently, based on your established cadence. Plug yourself into a community of like-minded individuals who share your passion for growth. Together, we can inspire and empower each other to reach new heights on our personal development journey. You are guaranteed to witness transformation unfold.
