Why I Stopped Leaving My Success to Chance (And You Should Too)

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” – Greek Proverb

I love to travel, and one thing that absolutely fascinates me is the towering cathedrals with their intricate work and details carved into every nook and cranny.

I’ve stood in these sacred spaces, craning my neck to admire soaring arches, and found myself mesmerized by a tiny corner that most visitors wouldn’t even notice for more than a second. Yet someone—an artist, a craftsman, a stonemason—poured their heart and skill into that forgotten detail with the same care as the grand altar.

There are times I’ve stood there thinking: Who would have thought this hidden corner, this place where no one would even lay eyes for more than a second, deserved such intention?

But the artists, the engineers, the workers—they all put their heart and mind into every piece. Years, decades, even centuries later, we stand in awe, admiring their magnificent work.

It was with great intention that some of the finest people gathered and brought it to completion. Master architects drew detailed plans. Skilled craftsmen showed up day after day, year after year. Each stone was placed with purpose. Every detail was executed with care.

Have you ever seen splendour like that happen by accident?

Never.

A great garden is built over time with constant weeding, watering, and tending. It doesn’t become a great garden by accident.

A master musician doesn’t stumble into Carnegie Hall. They practice scales for hours, perform in small venues, study under mentors, and refine their craft with relentless intention.

An incredible business isn’t built by hoping customers will magically appear. It’s constructed through strategic planning, consistent execution, and deliberate choices made day after day.

What intentional efforts are you taking to grow and do the things consistently that will make you extraordinary?

Are you leaving your life to happen by accident? Or are you building it intentionally?

I want you to know that everything awesome takes work.

We drift. We coast. We let life happen TO us instead of happening FOR us.

When was the last time you sat down and honestly asked yourself, “Where do I want to be in five years, and what specific actions am I taking to get there?” Not in a dreamy, wishful thinking way, but in a concrete, calendar-blocking, accountability-creating way.

If you’re like most people, it’s been a while. Maybe never. And that’s exactly why most people are living lives of quiet desperation, wondering why success always seems to happen to “other people.” The “other people” aren’t luckier, smarter, or more talented. They’re just more intentional.

I want the story to be different for you. The good news is you don’t have to be the smartest, most talented, or most brilliant person in the room.

But you do have to be intentional.

Nothing great happens by accident. The cathedral builders weren’t perfect people—they were purposeful people. They had a vision, they made a plan, and they showed up consistently to build something lasting. You can do the same with your life.

“Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” – Jim Rohn

This is exactly what those cathedral builders understood centuries ago.

Right now, you have a choice. You can keep hoping that things will get better on their own. You can keep drifting, wondering why other people seem to have all the luck.

Or you can decide that your life deserves the same intentional care that those craftsmen gave to their cathedrals.

The people living the lives you admire didn’t get there by accident. They achieved their success by being ruthlessly intentional about their growth, much like medieval builders who meticulously planned every arch and polished every stone.

Your life is your cathedral. The question is: What kind of builder will you be?

Your future self is either going to thank you or resent you for the choices you make today. The version of you living your dream life five years from now got there because present-day you decided to stop hoping and start building.

Nothing gets awesome accidentally. Everything awesome takes work.

The cathedral builders understood this. They knew that something magnificent required intention, planning, and consistent effort over time.
