Have you ever been so engrossed in the moment that you completely missed how things around you were shifting? That’s exactly what happened to me at a revolving restaurant. My husband and I were savouring the view when I got distracted by the menu. After deciding on what I am going to eat I looked up, the scenery had transformed entirely—a new building stood in front of me, and I was astonished by how subtly the change had occurred.
Change can often creep up on us in a similar way. Just like the restaurant’s slow rotation, life’s changes can happen subtly until we suddenly find ourselves facing the new reality. Whether it’s in our personal or professional lives, change is inevitable.
Conformity is the quickest path to mediocrity.
If we become too comfortable or resist change, we risk being left behind. We often do the right things and then keep repeating them, expecting the trajectory to keep climbing up. But it doesn’t. Why? Because what worked once doesn’t work now. We need to change the way we do things now.
How Can You Change Proactively?
Instead of simply reacting to external forces we can change proactively by taking deliberate steps to change ourselves. It’s about taking control of our goals, our growth and our development, and not just letting life happen to us. This empowerment can boost our confidence and resilience in the face of change.
Embrace the Subtle Shifts
What are you doing to embrace the change that is happening around you? Are you resisting it? Or are you so caught up in the rhythm of life that that you haven’t even noticed how much the world has moved.
I’m a big fan of personal growth. There’s a quote that I love: What got you here won’t get you there. When I first heard it, I was stunned. We often do the right things and then keep repeating them, expecting great results. But the truth is, sometimes we need to change the way we do things in order to grow. Here are the three things you can do today to embrace change.
1. Cultivate a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is the belief that your skillsets, abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, discipline and hard work. This mindset fosters a love for learning. How do you cultivate it? By embracing challenges, staying curious, and committing to continuous learning.
For instance, I’ve made it a habit to read books that challenge my current thinking, attend workshops, and be in proximity to people who are seeking to learn and grow.
2. Take Small, Intentional Steps
The journey of change doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small. Let’s say you want to read more. Instead of setting an ambitious goal of reading a book a week, start with five pages a day. Once that habit becomes ingrained, you can gradually increase your reading time. In the past, I had never finished a book. I didn’t have the appetite to keep going because I lacked the discipline to finish a book. Just by taking small baby steps, I have built the muscle to finish reading the books I start. I aim to read an article or a few pages of a book daily.
3. Challenge Your Comfort Zones
Growth happens outside your comfort zone. Although it’s uncomfortable to be outside our comfort zone, that’s where magic happens. To proactively change, you need to get comfortable with discomfort. This could mean taking on tasks that stretch your capabilities or trying new projects that make you feel uneasy.
Challenging myself with new projects at work or in my personal life helps me grow in unexpected ways. Each time I push past my comfort zone, I discover strengths I didn’t know I had. And with each success, I build on the momentum of being a better version of myself with more confidence and belief.
The Cautionary Tale of BlackBerry
Do you remember when BlackBerry was the king of smartphones? Its iconic keyboard and secure software set it apart. Professionals worldwide trusted BlackBerry for its security and reliability—it became the gold standard.
However, despite its early success, BlackBerry made a critical mistake: it failed to adapt. It should have taken the touchscreen market seriously. Very soon the touchscreens and app-centric operating systems like Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android took over their market share. While the world moved forward, BlackBerry stayed the same. The result? It couldn’t keep up with the technological trends and was eventually left behind. Today, it’s a discontinued brand.
The lesson here is clear: refusing to change can leave you obsolete. If we don’t stay flexible and ahead of the curve, we risk falling behind. When you learn, grow, and prepare for change, new doors of opportunity will open for you. Growth and success will follow.
Are you ready to move forward with the world, or will you let it pass you by?
As you navigate your journey, remember that change is constant and inevitable. Embrace it proactively. Reflect on how you can take deliberate steps to grow and adapt. Are you ready to embrace the shifts and move forward, or will you let the world pass you by? The choice is yours, but remember, the world will not wait for you.
