Who loves dealing with problems? If you’re like me, you’d rather life run smoothly without a single hiccup. But if you think about it, challenges are inevitable and they serve as stepping stones that push us to learn, improve, and reach deeper levels of fulfillment. Take video games, for instance.
There was a phase when my boys loved video games. They’d spend hours trying to reach the next level. Once they got there, they’d invest countless hours trying to conquer that new level and move on to the next. Each level presented new problems, each harder than the one before.
What happens when they complete all the levels? Do they go back and play again? Not usually. At least my boys would lose interest and look for something new, something more challenging. Why? Because they had mastered that game. In video games, challenges are laid out hierarchically, so if you are on level 2, you’re solving problems that are harder than level 1 but not as hard as level 10. You build your skills step by step and feel excited when you get promoted to the next level—even though it means facing bigger and tougher problems.
But Life Isn’t a Video Game
Unlike video games, life doesn’t always give us a clear path. Yet the principle remains the same: the challenges we face are shaping us for the next level.
How Challenges Shape Us
When it comes to life, we often run away from problems. We say we don’t like to face challenges. But deep down, we know that problems are good for us. They push us to grow, and we feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when we solve them.
Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” — African Proverb.
The Benefits of Embracing Problems
- Catalysts for Growth: Problems push us out of our comfort zone. Just as muscles grow through resistance, our character and skills grow through challenges. Without problems, there’s no real opportunity for improvement.
- Build Resilience: Each problem we face strengthens our mental toughness. You learn to handle stress and setbacks with greater ease.
- Teach Valuable Lessons: Problems often reveal our weaknesses, blind spots, or gaps in knowledge. They give us a chance to learn, adapt, and avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
A Personal Perspective
Reflecting on some of my toughest challenges—whether in my career, relationships, or personal growth—I realize that those moments have shaped me the most. I remember facing seemingly impossible deadlines, navigating complex projects, and trying to gain buy-in from team members who were already juggling their own pressing tasks. It felt daunting at the time. Yet, through collaboration, connecting with others, communicating priorities, and staying flexible to each other’s needs, I grew in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Each time I met those deadlines, no matter how tough, it filled me with a profound sense of pride and accomplishment. Those experiences taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the power of teamwork. I came out of them stronger, wiser, and more determined than ever. I can confidently say that every challenge has made me a better person, revealing strengths I never knew I had. While the struggle is never easy, I always look back with pride once it’s over.
The Diamond Analogy
Just as extreme pressure transforms carbon into a diamond, challenges can shape us into our strongest, most brilliant selves. Without this pressure, carbon would remain just another piece of coal. Similarly, without challenges, we will remain stuck in our normal selves and would miss out on the opportunity for extraordinary growth. The next time you face a difficult challenge, try to view it through a new lens. Trust that this struggle is shaping you. And remember, every problem is an opportunity to grow and level up in the game of life.
